Our Mission
EgyptTalks.com was launched with an ethical aim which is to eliminate the child labour phenomenon in Egypt.
child labour is prohibited by Egypt's Child Law. However, according to ILO statistics, nearly 78% of working children are in the rural areas and are found in the agricultural sector helping out on the family farm, 10% of working children are found in leather tanneries, 9% are found in front of the rug looms and 3% are working as domestic servants.
As a matter of fact, child labour in Egypt is rooted in poverty, and poverty is known to cause children to drop out of school. Even when poor children stay in school, the miserable conditions of their families often lowers their school performance. A vicious circle is thus created between poverty and education.
It would be unrealistic, therefore, to believe that the tightening of legislative measures banning child labour or the strict enforcement of labour laws would break this vicious circle. So long as poverty persists, there will be child labour.
So, a realistic strategy to deal with child labour nationally in order to put an end to this phemomenon is to improve the standard of living for those families and children at risk for child labour.
Our company (among other Egyptian enterprises) has contributed to the
development of a national strategic framework for combating child labour
that aims at increasing awareness in the community and workplaces of the
importance of the creation of income opportunities for poor families of
at-risk-children.
With the help and support of the Ministry of Social Affair and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, we managed to identify priority target groups and, therefore, several significant steps that aims to address the root causes of child labour have been taken by supporting direct actions aiming at preventing child labour including the expansion in hiring more craftsmen provided that they:
- are poor
- no less than 21 years old
- have families to support
- their children are not dropped out of school
Due to this policy, the total number of our craftsmen has jumped over the last five years from only 12 in 2001 to more than 73 this year. This is not the end since we are planning to support more poor families and create more job opportunities in the near future.
We even launched our website to help doing the marketing for the
handicrafts made by poor housewives such as jewelry boxes, printed cotton t-shirts, papyrus paintings, handmade soap bars, Egyptian statues, quilt cushions, hand-painted glassware, beaded crochet scarves, handwoven and embridered shawls, etc.
EgyptTalks.com does welcome both retail and wholesale orders to save children at risk for child labour and their poor families.
