| Many Legends surround this ancient Egyptian jackal-headed God. His mother, Nephthys, was married to Set but as wife of the God of Aridity and Storm, conceived no children. Her greatest wish was to have a child. So, she deceived Osiris (possibly by diguising herself as Isis). The fruit of that union was Anubis. Fearful of Set's vengeance, she exposed the infant who was later discovered and adopted by Isis.
Anubis was the funary God who invented mummification, the Jackal head is symbolised for two purposes, that jackals were always found in the graveyards almost as guardians and the other that they were renowned for there speed. As the mummification process took so long it was thought that this would quicken things in the under world.
