Egyptian Papyrus Paintings

Papyrus is the ancient Egyptians invention for writing paper, and it was the most important writing material in the ancient world. Our word "paper" is derived directly from the word "Papyrus". It is believed that papyrus was first used about 4000BC, and became one of Egypt's major exports.

The word papyrus means, “That belongs to government”. Egyptian rulers realizing the importance of Papyrus, made its production a state monopoly, and guarded the secret of Papyrus jealously. There was no real competitor to Papyrus until, in AD 105 in China Ts'ai Lun, a court official, invented paper .

The process of manufacturing papyrus has not changed in thousands of years. Papyrus paper is made by first soaking the papyrus in river water to soften the skin of the reed. The papyrus is gathered and trimmed into pieces about 12 inches long. It is then soaked in river water to keep the reed flexible. The tough skin is peeled away exposing a white pith. This pith is sliced into thin strips with a razor blade. The slices are squeezed to remove the excess water. The strips are laid slightly overlapping, vertically and horizontally, creating a tight weave. The strips are then squeezed between blotters and held under pressure until the papyrus strips dry. The natural juices from the papyrus create a glue, giving strength and durability to the paper.

Please be wary of non-authentic papyrus. They are cheap due to the fact that they are made of banana leaves instead of real papyrus leaves. Not to mention that the pharaonic scenes are machine printed; NOT hand-painted. Real authentic genuine papyrus paintings lasts for life. Always remember that you only get what you pay for!
