Ancient Egyptians commonly wore amulets in the form of the Scarabeus sacer beetle. They were also called 'khepror' and were carved from many different types of stones and fashioned of metals. The scarab beetle was associated with the life-giving and ever-present sun. The Egyptians related the activities of the beetle to the solar cult stories about the rebirth of the sun, in which the scarab rolled the sun across the sky each day. Scarabs bore the cartouches of various kings, and were placed with mummies for protection and to guarantee favorable judgement in the afterlife. |
